Melton Memorial Observatory
I suppose every place has its hidden treasures. College campuses are no exception. There are lots of great spots at the University of South Carolina to people watch or study or grab a bite, but one out-of-the-way location is the Melton Memorial Observatory.
Dating to 1928, the building has an unassuming facade and the characteristic dome of any other observatory. Easy to overlook, not as heavily trafficked as some campus attractions, this is the place to stargaze on Monday nights when it’s open to the public. Did I mention it’s free?
They’re getting with the program on social media, too, sharing images and information to Facebook and Twitter, though the Instagram situation is tragic — not a single update since June 2013.
Don’t let that hold you back, though. Stop by if you find yourself in the neighborhood.
